Do you like to travel? I LOVE to travel. I’ve traveled so much that my application for Global Entry consisted of a good 20 minutes of scrolling through old photos to remember everywhere I’ve been in the last 5 years.
I caught the travel bug when I was 21 and first left good ‘ol Nebraska to visit Toronto for my birthday. Alone. Why alone, you might ask? Well that’s a story I’d prefer to tell after a whiskey or 5, so we’ll come back to that.
After college I traveled around Southeast Asia for about 9 months, and then sporadically traveled to various countries in Asia and Europe. I’ve traveled alone and with groups and there’s many benefits to both methods. But I actually prefer traveling alone!
I go over some tips in this video such as:
- Book an exit ticket before entering a country
- Go old school and print out your travel info (in addition to your mobile stuff)
- You can use layovers to your advantage in some cases
- I personally recommend aisle seats
- Make sure you don’t bring banned food into other countries
- Eat the plane food (or bring your own) to help with jet lag
- Be honest about your budget vs comfort feelings
- Check the seat back entertainment for games
But that’s not all! *energetic announcer voice*
When it comes to travel, I can’t overstate how important it is to honestly consider your budget. I’ve stayed in hostels, homestays, couch surfing pads, motels, five star hotels, casinos, you name it. I’ve also eaten everything from street food to Michelin meals. There’s benefits to every style of travel, and none of these are inherently superior to the others.
I recommend looking at your budget and thinking honestly about what matters to you. If you love food, set aside more money for food. If you care about your sleep and need a big comfy bed then allocate more money into your hotel. If you love walking then you can lower your transport costs, and you might need to increase them instead if you are easily exhausted. You should take these into consideration while being completely and totally honest with yourself because there is NOTHING worse than going on a trip and ruining it for yourself because you hate the hostel you’re in or because you got blisters on your toes and had to skip a couple of attractions. I’m not saying you have to make it rain, but spend your money wisely.
That’s all I have for today! I’ve got a couple more travel videos that I’ll be making in the weeks to come. Let me know some of your travel tips to! I’d love to hear them.
