I Totally Know How To Travel: Food and Language Edition

First, I want to say that it was in fact MEGA hot when I recorded this video. I lived in San Diego for awhile and loved everything about it except that there wasn’t air conditioning in most apartments. Then I moved to Ireland and there’s still not air conditioning. I may need to reevaluate some of these decisions of mine…

Anyway, let’s talk food and languages! Like I said in the video, you really should try and learn at least a little of the language when traveling. It doesn’t have to be a lot! Just… make an effort. Don’t be that jerk who shows up and expects everyone to speak english in a country that doesn’t speak english. You don’t have to be fluent, just do your best! A combo of Googled phrases and pantomime will get you far.

Some phrases I recommend looking up on the ‘ol Google machine:

  1. Where’s the toilet?
  2. Is this spicy?
  3. What (food) do you like?
  4. Thank you.
  5. Excuse me/Pardon me.

I use #3 in particular when I’m traveling to ask the waiters in restaurants to bring me food they like!

The other major tip I want to mention again is that you can write down ALL THE THINGS. If you’re afraid you might forget it or can’t pronounce it, just write it down in advance in a tiny notebook. I used this to get prescriptions, order foods, get taxis home, locate tourist attractions, and even find my way to work when I’d just moved to a new country. I would look up how to write things, write them, and then ask Reddit if I wrote it correctly. Worked like a charm!

I mention some other stuff in the videos, but this was all the major points! How about you? Do you have any travel tips? I’d love to hear them!
